Meet the Maker

Selbrae House is led by siblings Donny, Emma, and Colin Carstairs, supported by their parents Louise and Ian – two generations working side by side in a true family business.

Growing up on a farm in Scotland shaped both their connection to nature and their appreciation for craft. Today, Emma’s hand-drawn designs form the heart of every collection, Colin carefully oversees production, and Donny steers the business with a natural talent for leadership.

“We’ve all grown in our roles here – in completely different areas and with totally different skill sets. It’s amazing what you can do when you have the freedom and space to grow. We are a small team but we like that — it’s how we work best.”

This close family bond brings passion, care, and authenticity to everything created under the Selbrae House name.

Materials

Natural materials sit at the heart of Selbrae House. Slate, Scottish oak, olive wood, and linen are used extensively, chosen for their durability, sustainability, and individual character.

Each material brings a sense of the outdoors inside – no two pieces are ever quite the same. From the tactile surface of slate to the warmth of wood grain and the texture of woven linen, these materials are selected to age beautifully and stand the test of time.

People and Production

Many Selbrae House products pass through multiple skilled hands in the Fife workshop, where traditional craftsmanship meets modern production techniques. From wood shaping and slate finishing to engraving, printing, and candle-making, much of the process happens in-house.

The brand also works closely with trusted partners who share the same values – including small-scale woodland managers, sawmills, weavers, and family artisans overseas – helping preserve traditional skills while maintaining consistent quality.

Packaging

Selbrae House is committed to reducing environmental impact beyond the product itself. Cardboard is recycled and shredded in-house for protective packaging, while plastic has been removed wherever possible.

Packaging choices include paper belly bands without plastic coating, ensuring each item arrives carefully protected and beautifully presented – whether purchased as a gift or for everyday living.
