We all know who Sarah Beeny is. She's the queen of property development, and her knowledge and expertise make her a regular feature on our television schedules. Recently, I got in touch with Sarah via Twitter on her #beenyknowsbest chat to ask her a very important question about location vs size...
Location vs Size: What Matters Most?
Deciding on the right location for a house can be a headache. There seems to be a compromise to be had somewhere, whether it means opting for a smaller house with better local facilities (but at more expense), or a larger house with fewer amenities, more affordable but sadly in the middle of nowhere… So, is it really all about location, or is it better to opt for space? As someone who's spent more than two years saving up to buy my first house and is now in a position to do so, it's a question that's troubling my boyfriend and I. So we turned to Sarah Beeny for help...
The question we asked Sarah was:
Would you purchase a smaller home in a better selling location or a larger home for the same price in a harder to sell location?
And this is what Sarah replied:
"It really depends on how long you plan on being there. There is a considerable cost to moving, so personally, I think it's better to push bigger and move less. You will also find that it may not be such a good location, but you can make a happy home in an area that might not be as 'fashionable' right now, but may well have a great community. If you are buying with a view to selling in the near future, then go for the safer bet for sale, as it's so frustrating to be unable to move when you want to".
Isn't that great advice?! Thank you for taking the time to answer, Sarah!
What are your thoughts and experiences on buying when it comes to size vs location? And what would you ask Sarah Beeny if you could?
